Why the blow/gel balance is the whole game in foam design

Every polyurethane foam formulation is a race between two reactions: water and isocyanate generating CO2 gas (blow), and polyol and isocyanate building the polymer network (gel). Get the timing wrong and the foam either collapses before it can support its own structure, or gels shut before the gas can escape — trapping it as unwanted closed cells.
